Vedanta, a mining and metals conglomerate, is planning to roll out its first made-in-India chip in 2.5 years. The company has been in talks with several technology partners to set up a semiconductor fab in India. In February 2022, Vedanta had announced a joint venture with Foxconn to manufacture chips and display panels in India. However, the partnership was terminated in May 2023.

Despite the setback, Vedanta is still committed to its plans to set up a semiconductor fab in India. The company has identified a new technology partner and is in the process of finalizing the investment details. The fab is expected to be located in Gujarat and will have a capacity of 28nm chips.

The production of the first made-in-India chip is a significant milestone for India’s semiconductor ecosystem. The country currently imports most of its semiconductor chips, and the government has been trying to attract investment in the sector. The production of made-in-India chips will help to reduce India’s dependence on imports and boost the domestic manufacturing sector.

The Vedanta fab is expected to create over 10,000 jobs in India. The company has also said that it will work with local universities and colleges to develop a skilled workforce for the semiconductor industry.
